New Release Movies during Summer

When it comes to watching films I am a complete film junkie. Over the summer apart from working I would say I was watching all the new films that was released in the cinema. I love watching films and I really am addicted! I would say not so much old films however most films 2005 and upwards. I can honestly say I'm not too much of a fan of old films however when it comes to the classic films with actors I love I do have have to watch them. Some of my all time favourite classic actors/actresses are Audrey Hepburn, Micheal J Fox, Steve Martin (He's still in a lot of films now adays), Rick Moranis and Meryl Streep. I mean to some people theses aren't 'old' however to me they're classics. Over the summer I watched pretty much one new released film every week. This is definitely one of mine and my partners hobbies and then after we would discuss what we liked about the film, was it realistic, was the acting good, was the story line interesting etc. However my partner is a history junkie and loves spotting anything that wasn't meant to be around in the time the film was set including technology and I love admiring the costumes, make-up and hair designs.

My Summer

Well I could honestly say I did'nt do very many exciting things this summer and I didn't go aboard anywhere either. :(

However I did work alot to make money so I can afford to live and do things I want to do later in the year. I started work as soon as got back to where I live, Swindon. I work In the Swindon Designer outlet Village in Clarks, luckly enough I quit last year to attend University and they accepted me back over the summer to work while I was at home in swindon. Another pro was while working there over the summer I was promoted from a sales assissant to team leader which I was rather happy about. It was nice to go back to somewhere I knew as I have previously been there for four years.

All this working will pay off because this year over the Christmas holidays I'm going to brazil for the third time with my partner to see his family as he is originally from brazil. Also In January with the University funnily enough on my 21st birthday we are flying out to New York City which i'm also super excited about. So work, work work pays off to explore the things you want to do and see.

Conclusion and Moving forwards

I think the past year really has helped me develop as a person and as a make-up artist. I think this year I definitely need to take more chances and really push myself to he limit. I think this year I'm more determined than ever to really develop my skills, work with new people and learn more amazing things in University and outside. When I first started I wasn't sure where I stood with my career and now I'm looking forward to take any opportunity and push myself further to get the dream career I want. I'm definitely more focused and really looking towards the future.

I think there are many areas I can work on and improve however looking at my feedback, reviewing my work and reflecting on the year has really helped me define certain things such as opportunities, exploring more, researching more In depth and starting to be more creative and think outside the box.

I want to use all this aspects to really get myself deep into the next unit to self improve and keep doing better, achieving an learning more. This year I really want to collaborate with more people from other courses to help further my experience and get more contacts. I really would like to either get a job this year on a make-up counter because I think this could help develop my skills and become more confident on applying make-up to different people and advising them.

Improvements and Decisions

What am I doing well and what I can change?
I feel the year was very successful and I learnt a variety of new skills and learning how to work to the brief. I think I do work to the brief well however I feel I struggle with pushing my ideas out further. Sometimes I tend to stick with the safe option knowing it will work however now I need to try and think outside the box and push my ideas and creativity further. I think I do need to explore more ideas and really push the boat out to get creative. I think when going to the 1-1s with my tutor and receiving feedback really strengthened me to see what I need to improve on and what I need to include more of.  I think the whole year have been a complete experience for me and I've definitely learnt a lot and can see what I need to do. I think what I can improve on or change is developing my work more, creating more ideas and really getting creative with the brief/unit. I think time managing is one of my high points, I do try and equalise my work load and within the timed assessments I work well to completing it in the specified time.

What would I do differently if I had the chance?-

I think I would try and work with more people when partnering up and also try to experiment with looks more and creating a variety of looks to develop further. I think I would like to get into other projects more and collaborate with different from different groups and courses. I think I always do push myself very hard to receive a good outcome and I feel 1-1s with my tutor of what I need to do more of and how I can achieve more really drives me to try harder which is a big influence to the decisions I make. I think there are always areas I could improve on and in certain brief my work shows my strengths and what I'm not so go at. I think if I could say there was one thing that I would like to re-do or change I could say my Miss Havisham look. I think the outcome was how the design was however I'm not so sure I liked the look and wasn't very proud of what I created. I think it's because I struggled to think of idea as I wasn't happy with the ones I created so I had to chose one and go with it. I feel I need to give myself enough time to practice the look to make sure I'm happy with the outcome.

What was my most successful moments during the year?
I think I had my fair share of ups and downs this year however I feel to me one of my most successful moments was when I was paired up with Beth for the Elizabethan look. Her hair was completely braided and synthetic so I wouldn't apply any heat so it was all structure and technique based. The outcome I was extremely pleased with and felt this was a successful moment for me as I previously have no hair experience. I was also very please with my walking dead 'Quentin' look as I feel I don't have the greatest talent using prosethics however after many sessions of practice I was rather proud of the outcome of the look.

Jasmine – you have tackled this unit in a mature and professional manner – well done.  Your ideas and concept are clear to see through your mood boards, and your final images are well thought out and presented.  You have taken on any comments made during seminar and tutorial discussions and your retouching skills have really progressed.  One point – the hair on your fragrance advert looks a little dense at the top, this could be down to lighting or the retouching…But overall you have created a very good set of images.

I love your final design work, you have worked hard on both your own design and your partners.
I can clearly see where your inspiration has come from and you have some very good reference pictures.
You have shown some good hair techniques and really pushed you new skills. You have also related them well to your research work.
Well done.

Reflecting

How have I changed in my attitude or actions, and what have I learnt?

When starting the year I was nervous to apply make-up to new people and open up about ideas. Even though I do have previous experience with make-up as I did it in college I feel working on different people at a new level helped me open up more. I try to come across confident and just work with the skills I have and try to learn and experiment with new ideas and techniques. I think my attitude towards make-up, my career and the course has always been quite strong as I always try my best, think positive and take everything we do seriously. I think the overall year was amazing and I think the work load was much more than what I expected as I felt slightly drowned between each lesson and having different assessments constantly and constant deadlines for tasks. I really did try and keep on top of the work load because as soon as you start falling behind more just starts piling on and makes it even harder. I think it was quite hard to find models for assessments because all my friends are on other course so its hard to find time when we were both free and available to shoot a look however when you start collaborating with people sometimes favors can be returned. I enjoyed when we were partnered together sometimes because then you get to work with different people in your class as people tent to pair up with the same people I think this helps us work on different people so we can experience different face shapes, skin tone and skin complexion which helps us develop as a make-up artist. I think over time and during learning new things in each lesson keeps slightly changing you when you start to feel more confident, determine and also the feedback from peers and teachers. Over the past year I have learnt a lot within make-up application, fashion and history and also general skills such as timing and organisation. Each assessment really put you to the test to execute a complete look in a certain amount of time, also arriving on time, having a model/partner, bringing all the kit and brushes, being dressed appropriate and bringing face charts and notes. Each assessment got slightly easier as we knew what was expected of us during the assessment.

Have I improved?

I think over the period of first year I have improved, I think my skill set has got better and I've definitely learnt more through hair and make-up. I also feel I have definitely got more confident applying make-up on different people. I think also documenting and blogging all of my work helped me to evaluate my room and try and improve or progress to do better. I'm definitely ready for this year and can't wait to work with different people and learn a different area of make-up. I think this year I will try and reflect more on my work and hopefully it will show through my skills. Below I have presented a few of the looks I created in the first year which i'm happy and proud with.
